Bishop Adam Lepa

PhD in theology in the area of pedagogy, between 1988–2014 was an assistant bishop in Łódź and since 1988 for 5 years was a rector of the Higher Seminary in Łódź, which he graduated from (1956-61), and currently, he is a senior bishop of our archdiocese. Born in Łódź in 1939. After attending the seminary, he studied catechetics at the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw, and got a PhD in pedagogy at KUL. At the beginning of the 60s, he was a curate and a parish priest of several parishes — in Dobroń and Łódź.

He is the author of 12 books and several hundred publications on the functioning of modern media. He was a spiritual director of academic societies and at the same time had the function of a diocese priest of teachers and educators. In 1965 he became the leader of the Diocese Board for Social Media and in 1978 the chairman of the Department of Pastoral Curia. He took part in the council of priests and the college of consultors. Then presided over the Diocese Committee of the 2nd National Eucharistic Congress and the comittee organising the visit of John Paul II in Łódź during the Pope’s journey to Poland in 1987), having been granted a year before the title and the function of the papal honorary chaplain.

In 1987 Adam Lepa became the general curate of the diocese and received his episcopal ordination on 2 January 1988 at the Łódź Cathedral of St Jan Kostka; the main consecrator was the Polish primate, cardinal Józef Glemp. Between 1989-94 he was part of the structures of the Polish Episcopate Conference as a leader of the Committee for Social Media, at the same time he participated in the European Committee of Bishops for Mass Media (CEEM). He was a leader of the Programme Council for the Television Broadcast of Holy Masses and was also included into the Board for Means of Communication. Moreover, he took the function of a vice-president of the Programme Council of the Catholic Information Agency and between 1991-99 was a member of the Main Committee of the 2nd Polish Plenary Convocation.

On 27 May 2014, pope Francis accepted his resignation from the position of the Assistant Bishop of the Łódź archdiocese.

Bishop Adam Lepa was awarded with the Medal of Polish Independence and Human Rights, Pro Memoria Medal, Medal of the World Association of the Polish Army Soldiers and the Medal of prof. Janusz Groszkowski. He also received the “Sursum Corda” Award, the John Paul II Award and the Julian Kulenty Award. He is an honorary member of the order of the Knights Hospitallers, the Catholic Film Association and the Catholic Association of Journalists.
